Grief Tourism
While Grief Tourism may be perceived as extreme by some tourists, it can be a cathartic tool. As in the case of Holocaust Tourism, it is often a source of great relief, connection and feeling – such as visits to UNESCO world heritage sites such as Auschwitz and Anne Frank’s house.
Grief Tourism also offers destinations that don’t fit into the conventional tourism mold, an opportunity to contribute historic and educational importance. Destinations connected to tragedy such as the Peace Memorial Park and Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima, Japan or Cambodia’s Killing Fields Memorial and Land Mine museum, whose goal is to educate tourists about the atrocities carried out by the Khmer Rouge regime and help prevent future crimes against humanity.
