Goth glam is back (again)
Goth has been around for decades, having evolved out of the punk movement in the 70’s and reaching a high in the 90’s. But the macabre vibe is gaining traction once again. A symbol of dark economic times? Perhaps.
Black will always be in style, but this fall there will be no shortage of dark glamour on the runways. From Christian Louboutin’s Rollerball Loafers, which add an eerie goth edge to casual driving mocs, to Riccardo Tisci, who’s managed to transform Givenchy with his romantic goth style (“Gothic Ballerina“), the look is certainly becoming more mainstream. Even the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York exhibited a “Gothic: Dark Glamour” show earlier this year and is planning a Japanese fashion exhibit for 2010, highlighting Japanese Goth.
And it isn’t only taking over in fashion circles. Nobody needs to point out the phenomenal success of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire-themed “Twilight” series — the film based on the first book grossed $35.7 million on its opening day last November, with the sequel out later this year. Or HBO’s hit “True Blood,” which gave actress Anna Paquin her first Golden Globe for her role as Sookie Stackhouse, the vampire-loving waitress.
