Food trends for 2009

It’s that time of year when all good marketers start looking to the year ahead for creative, new strategies for 2009…we want (and need) to know what consumers will crave, so we can be there to meet their demand. The team here at KWE group are self-professed foodies, so what better subject to analyze than food….

Posh foods. From truffle-laced popcorn to custom-made chocolates, there’s been a move in developed countries for consumers to indulge themselves with luxury products. These products aren’t necessarily high in calories, and are exciting and experiential. For many, this is a treat or reward for sticking to a healthier lifestyle. Another possible reason? The economy. These tasty bites are relatively low-priced luxuries, which provide a sense of indulgence in tough times for foodies who want to stay on the cutting edge without going bankrupt.

Wellness foods. This correlates to a global lifestyle trend of moving back to health and wellness. Consumers are looking for foods to counter poor health caused by busy lifestyles, insufficient exercise, fast food and rising rates of childhood obesity. As a consequence, people all over the world are recognizing that diet is increasingly more important to their health. Superfruits, single serve snacks, nutrition bars, protein bars and mineral waters are increasingly popular. Another healthy and eco-friendly option: sparkling tap water!

Eat well. Live well. Sounds like great ways to start the new year.
