Spring update: coming up flowers
After a gloomy 2009, floral prints are THE trend for spring/summer 2010. Designers adorned their spring collections with garden varieties of rosettes and sweet floral patterns on just about everything from accessories to dresses and jackets. British brand Liberty kicked off the season earlier this year by bringing its iconic florals to America in the form of a collaboration with Target. This bright, happy trend has also influenced the beauty world, causing an explosion of pretty pinks and cotton candy hues for lips, cheeks and nails in shops.
Flowers are also a blossoming food trend. Something we expect to see a lot more of are organic edible flowers showing up in many more places, especially in restaurants, as well as in bottled drinks as infusions. Not only are they are being sold on their own in small plastic containers, but they’re showing up in pre-packaged boxes of lettuce (Locally Known in Maine does this) and as garnishes on plates at organic restaurants – Grezzo Restaurant in Boston for instance.
For those with a sweet tooth, Cocomaya in London is a gourmet shop launched by three ex-fashion insiders. Lulu Guinness and Marni have commissioned Cocomaya haute chocolates for various fashion events; and rumor has it that Manolo Blahnik may be next. Their selection of exquisitely decorated flower chocolates (see below) consist of truffles and ganache chocolates topped with hand crafted marzipan flowers.
